Lean Principles involve the use of lean tools to assist in the optimization of a system, typically a manufacturing system although non-manufacturing systems such as distribution, warehousing, etc. have used Lean Process Principles to their advantage. Lean tools/methods include 5S, Andon, Queue, Workcells, Flow, Takt time, Hiejunka, JIT, Kanban, Poka-yoke, Standardized work, Value stream mapping to name a few and are used to reduce or eliminate the seven forms of waste:

  • Overproduction
  • Waiting
  • Transporting
  • Non-value added processing
  • Excess Inventory
  • Defects
